OpenAI launches Grid Protectors Program
OpenAI has announced the Grid Protectors Program, an effort intended to support affordable and reliable electricity in communities where it builds compute campuses. Working with utilities, regulators and policymakers, the company plans to establish arrangements that reduce campus electricity demand when the grid is under strain.
How the program is intended to work
According to OpenAI, future campuses may use several forms of flexibility depending on local needs and available equipment:
- Reduce power draw during periods of grid stress, with utilities agreeing on the amount, speed and duration of demand reduction.
- Supply power from on-site generation or storage where conditions allow.
- Use batteries and power controls to smooth changes in demand.
OpenAI says campuses should pay their own electricity and infrastructure costs. Demand flexibility is intended to help utilities manage existing systems, not replace investment in new energy supply and transmission.
First disclosed model in Georgia
The first disclosed example is the planned Effingham County campus in Georgia. OpenAI has committed to pay the full infrastructure and electric-service costs required to serve the project. Once operating, the campus is intended to reduce grid power draw during periods of community need.
The agreement with Georgia Power includes up to 1,000 MW of flexible demand response. OpenAI compares that capacity with the average electricity demand of roughly 700,000 households and says Effingham is intended to serve as a Grid Protectors pilot.
Georgia Power separately projects approximately $950 million in annual customer savings beginning in 2029 from its portfolio of large-load agreements and expected growth, including Project Camellia. This is a utility forecast, not savings already realized by the Grid Protectors Program.
What comes next
Specific arrangements will vary by local grid requirements, contracts and regulation. OpenAI says it will disclose additional commitments as they are finalized.
